Sunburn in Childhood and Malignant Melanoma

The risks of melanoma are greatly increased by having a sunburn when young.

Malignant melanoma is a very unusual and deadly form of skin cancer. It is one of the few cancers to have regular cases seen that spontaneously are cured without treatment. There has even been one reported case with widespread malignant melanomas on one side of the body with none at all on the other side.

That being said, melanoma remains the worst form of skin cancer. The bad knews is that it is increasing in frequency. Fears of changes in the atomosphere with global warming make the prospects for a change in that trend gloomy.

There is a definite increase in the amount of melanoma in people who have been sunburned as children. However this relationship is a bit shakey.

There is also increased melanoma among those with skin types easily burned. People with light skin and fair hair have increased numbers of malignant melanoma whether they have had sunburns or not.

However, most studies conclude that even among those people, there is an increase in the amount of melanoma if you have had sunburn as a child compared to those with the same skin type who have not.

The question is then what to do with this information.

First, guard your children agains too much sun exposure. This is especially important for those that are light skinned and fair haired, but it does apply to all.

There are several ways to do this. Obviously decreasing the amount of time in the sun will help. Besides that, it will help to keep increased amounts of clothing on.

This is even important in the rain. My wife and I were swimming once in Xal-Ha in Mexico in the rain. I had learned that I burn easily and actually was wearing a pair of jeans and a long sleeved shirt to swim and snorkel in.

My wife was laughing at me as she enjoyed the refreshing rain in her swim suit. But, the next day, she was miserable with a fairly severe sunburn.

The next thing to keep at hand is a good sunscreen. However, keep in mind that suncreen should not give you permission to spend extra time in the sun. The risk of melanoma will be increased with extra time in the sun despite the use of sunscreen. It should then be used as an extra safeguard against the sun.

Finally, it is important to become familiar with the way that melanoma looks. I will cover that information in future articles.
